Ramadan Driving
Driving in Dubai is never a safe or fun thing to do. However, driving during Ramadan is like taking your life in your hands on a daily basis. You've got tons of crazy Muslims, who are already exceedingly bad drivers, and now they are fasting, so driving around while they are starving and dehydrated. Definitely a horrible combination. We didn't have our car yet during Ramadan last year, so driving during Ramadan is a new experience for me. For the first two months of driving here, I was thanking god on a daily basis that I didn't die that day in a car crash (it made me more religious than ever before in my life, even more than when I was studying for my bar exam and praying everyday that I'd pass that). Well, after about two and a half months or so of driving here, I kind of figured out that right balance of aggressive-defensive driving you need to do here, and stopped thinking I was going to die daily. Now, since Ramadan started, it's like I've regressed back to those early driving in Dubai days. Some days on the way to pick up Jared from work, I avoid no less than 10 accidents (literally, and it's only about a 20 minute drive round-trip). These people are maniacs, and I honestly feel like I am playing a real life game of Frogger on the roads. It's scary as hell, and on top of everything else I dislike about Ramadan, driving may be the worst. Still counting those days until it's over....
